Instead, they must be the one to do the adjustments as they strive to live and start a new life in this foreign country. Part of which is to adopt and learn the English language. Immigrant children must be taught in school using English as the primary medium of instruction and not their native language. Study showed that non-native English speaking children who were taught with the use of the English language from the very beginning learn better and faster as compared to children, who were taught by their native language or bilingualism, before emerging them to mainstream English classes. Activists stated that to avoid confusions in the minds of these immigrant children and to help them to adjust in the norms and standards of the new society they are in, they must learn to adopt the English language (B. Mujica 152). Thereby, allowing non-native English speaking students to learn English effectively as they grow older. Nevertheless, opponents of the English Only movement, headed by James Fallows, strongly argued that teaching non-English speaking students with their native language or using bilingual education will help them in learning and understanding better their lessons, allowing to them acquire outstanding academic performance in school.
